Easily accessible from San Jose is the Braulio Carrillo National Park, home to a large variety of birds, animals, trees and plants. It is also the home to the dwellingplace of the magnificent Quetzal (brilliantly colored birds), members of the Trogon family found in forests and humid highlands. Once the sacred bird of the ancient Aztecs and Mayas, today the quetzal is the national emblem of Guatemala.

Although it is not possible to hike up the volcano, you are able to hike through the park searching for old lava flows and wildlife. Lake Arenal, the largest lake in Costa Rica is picture postcard perfect with the volcano sitting majestically in the background.
